Square dancers swing their way to state victoriesBy Debbie Wachter BonnieNew Castle NewsThree local square dance teams won blue ribbons at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.Two of the teams, the Crazy Eights and the Merry Mohawks, are from Mohawk Area High School. The third, the Rollin’ Rebels, is comprised of members of the Lawrence County Vocational Technical School’s newly formed Agriculture Club.Three local teams also placed second and received red ribbons in the competition. They are the Country Swingers and Swinging Country, both from the Wampum area, and the Flirts and Skirts from Union Area High School.More than 50 teams attired in colorful outfits competed in the dance contest. Participants ranged in age from elementary school to senior citizens.Teams won monetary prizes and each member received a ribbon.“The contest is actually set up to be entertainment for the farm show crowd,’’ said Cliff Wallace, adviser of the Mohawk teams.“The contest is actually set up to be entertainment for the farm show crowd. The finalists then performed a fourth dance and winners were chosen.First-place square dance teams and their members:• Crazy Eights, grades eight to 10: Adrian Schriner, Sandy Edwards, Rachel Cox, Nathan Parrott, Justin Craig, Eden Mack, Tessa Rhyne and Brian Lombardo.• Merry Mohawks, grades nine to 12: Norman Herb, George Harris, Paul Franke, Kevin Barger, Jason Richards, Sharlee Taylor, Mary Li 1 Kephart, Tracy Shiderly and Joann Esenwein.The Rollin' Rebels square dancers of the Lawrence County Area Vocational Technical School are, front row from left, Holly Mills, Jared Foreman, Harvey Albert, Meghan Baker, Matthew 'Tex' Williams and Brandi Turk; back row from left, Margie Hunt, adviser Henry Karki and Gwen Harman.• The Rollin’ Rebels: Matthew “Tex’’ Williams, his brother Mark Williams, a Mohawk student who danced with the group because it was short a member; Harvey Albert, Jared Foreman, Brandi Turk, Gwen Harman, Holly Mills, Meghan Baker and Margie Hunt. Henry Karki is theteam’s adviser.Demonstration teams from the Future Farmers of America of three local high schools also competed at the farm show with demonstrations.Union placed second, Mohawk placed fifth and Wilmington Area High finished eighth.
