Delphos Denied Financial Help for Canal ProjectDELPHOS. Jan. 26.-Request ofDelphos city council that Van Wertand Allen counties finance a shareol the cost of the proposed abandonment of the Miami and Eriecanal through the city was turned down Tuesday afternoon in city hall when a conference of three groups was held. The refusal, however, may blt; only temporary, as the meetingadjourned with the assurance trotncounty officials that they would seek an opinion from the attorney general on whether it would be legal tor them to appropriate county funds for a project inside an incorporated city.It is planned to run the water through the city in a conduit. The state board of public works has various contracts to furnish industries with water and would not be a party to doing away with the water altogether.Ash in his revised plans said the cost of the entire project, to be completed under WPA auspices itit materialized, would be $9K 0(H) The city's share of the cost would be approximately $24,000. John B. Lehmkuhle. who presided, and coun-cilmen said they desired it to be a four-way proposition, the city, the two counties and the state bearing $6,000 each of the cost. The reason the counties were asked for aid, councilmcn and the engineer pointed out, is because theyiwould lie benefited with the elimi-I nation of four bridges in the city, which at times in the past they have, for with their elimination there would be no further main-i tenance.
