GARNET D. BALTIMORE.Civil Knjfln^fr-lflu Wonderful Sucre**—A Credit to the Race.Garnet Douglass Haiti more was born 111 Troy, H. Y., April 15, 1853, and is the youngest son of Deter F. Haiti more, of that city. He was christened in honorof two representative men of the race— Henry Highland Garnet and Frederick Douglass. His first inklings of knowledge were obtained under the instruction of that active educator, Mary Hose-man, remaining in the William Rich school, sot apart for the instruction of colored children until about 187'J, when an event caused his withdrawal and was an important factor in determining his future career. The William Rich school at that time was under the supervision of an attenuated circuit preacher. To his narrow vision education to his pupils was not to carry them beyond tlieir lowly condition lln life. He therefore deemed it his duty to discourage any attempt to pass beyond this sphere.
