Eagles, Warriors and Lions Meet League Foes This WeekJoplin high scnool, McAuley Regional high and Jasper County Junior college will have ulterior motives driving them toward victories in conference games this week.Russ Kaminsky’s Joplin high Eagles and Doug Landrith’s Jasper County Junior college Lions will be trying to avenge losses dealt them earlier in the season by their opponents, while Jim Wyatt’s McAuley Regional high school Warriors will be seeking to stretch their conference lead.The Eagles will square off against Jack Roberts’ Springfield Glendale Falcons Friday night in an 8 o’clock Ozark Conference tussle at the high school.The two teams met earlier in the year with Glendale clipping the Eagles, 59-56, at Springfield. Joplin should have a slight advantage over Glendale in Friday’s game, with the addition of Terry Calhoun, a 6-0 guard, to the starting lineup. Calhoun, who missed th© first half of the semester due to scholastic deficiency, became eligible at the start of the second semester last week.The Eagles will enter the contest with a record of one win against three losses in conference play and nine victories against six losses over-all.Gil Stevens, a 6-3 senior center, leads the Eagles’ scoring department with 212 points in 15 outings. Doug Claxton and Stan Hunter follow with 165 and 162 points, respectively.Landreth’s charges will go against Kemper Military School of Boonville at 7:30 o’clock in their Thursday night outing on the Memorial hall hardwoods.Kemper whipped the Lfcms, 77-67, earlier in the year at Boonville. Jasper Juco sports a 3-3 record in Interstate Conference play and owns a 4-7 standard overall.The Lions, suffering from aheight problem during first-half play, will get a boost in that department through the addition of Bill Denney, a 6-5 sophomore center, to the starting lineup. Denney missed the first semester due to a scholastic deficiency.Art Markray, a 5-11 forward-guard, continues to pace the Lions in the scoring column with 229 points for a 20.8 average. Pwon Baird is in second place with 162 tallies, followed by Harry Reaves with 135 points.The McAuley Warriors will have a tough task ahead of them Friday night, when Wyatt’s charges travel to Alba for an 8:30 o’clock Little Eight Conference tussle.The Warriors need a victory to keep their lead in the conference standings. McAuley sports an 8-1 league record and a 14-2 overall standard. McAuley and Alba met earlier, with the Warriors pinning a 75-60 loss on the Wildcats.If the Warriors lose to Alba, itwould leave them only a half game ahead of Alba, which owns a 6-2 conference record. McAu-ley|s lone loop loss came at the hands of Duenweg, 53-48, while Alba’s two defeats were administered by McAuley and Duenweg.Joplin’s three junior high schools will have a busy week ahead of them, with Eldon Mailes’ South Cardinals opening action Monday afternoon at Pittsburg Lakeside.The three junior high schools will be competing for honors in the 7th annual Carthage tournament, beginning Tuesday night.Harold Thompson’s North Norsemen also will tangle with Pittsburg Roosevelt Thursday afternoon in a 2:20 o'clock tussle on the North hardwoods.Dale Heimer’s Ozark Bible college Ambassadors will compete in the Southwestern Bible college basketball tournament, which will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Oklahoma City,Iowa State Free Throws Upset Jay hawks, 64 to 58LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -Iowa State upset Kansas 64-58 Saturday and dealt a crippling blow to the Jayhawk Big Eight Conference basketball title hopes.The Cyclones used a control offense to excellent advantage in defeating a Kansas team which had won two previous games against the Iowans this season.Iowa State got 22 of its points on free throws, 19 of them in the second half. The Cylcones got only one field goal in the final seven minutes of the game, but scored 14 free throws in that period in holding onto their lead.Iowa State pulled ahead 50-40 with 5:55 left, and after Kansas narrowed the margin to 57-53 with 1:40 to go, the Cyclones saved the day on free throws, Kansas is 3-3 in Big Eight play and 11-6 for the season.
