Not even a year ago when he t06sed in 353 points for a 16-point per game average as a 6-3, 165-lb. junior. He was second leading scorer for the Hawks, the team leader in rebounds (10 per game) and in assists (six per game). He shot 75 per cent from the foul line.The 6-3 junior was returning this year as a senior, but he didn’t report at 6-3. He suddenly zoomed to 6-7, 185-pounds and changed from a good 6-3 ballplayer into an outstanding 6-7 product.In two years Bird’s vital statschanged from 6-1, 135-lbs. to 6-7, 185-lbs... that’s a growth of six inches and SO pounds.HIGHLY SOUGHTBecause of his sudden surge into the spotlight the young (17 years old this past Dec. 6) Blackhawk ace has brought college scouts in from all parts of the country.And they like what they see. A complete ballplayer with his in-side-outside shooting ability, his outstanding rebounding work, defensive play and passing, Bird is high on the list of many colleges and universities.He is still undecided about his college plans. Eight now he is more concerned about the success of the 1973-74 Springs Valley Blackhawks who are suddenly heading to the position of being one of the top (if not the top) favorites in the Washington Regional this year.Area coaches will be faced with quite a task when they meet the Hawks in tournament play.
