M AM U FAC IT HE OF PLATS OLAAS.The Chinese shoemakers at North Adams have recently abaorbed so much of public attention that the other interest has, by the casual observer, been passed by on the other side, and left almost entirely unnoticed. The Chinese are certainly a novelty in this portion of the world, and with their remarkably industiious manners, their singular method of living, peculiar appearance and ways, it is not a wonder that people have visited them from far and near, if f r no other reason than for the purpose of noticing and seeing something that was really new. Ana yet, with this novelty, there is notthe element of true public concern and industrial Hut uieie is in the manufacture of pla‘eglass, for it i? a matter which perhaps is n t generally kmwr, that it is less than a hundred years since g ass was brought into general use, and that, therefore, any material progress, especially in this country, concerning this particular branch of industry, must naturally command the public attention and be the subject of public comment.THE LENOX CLASS COMPANY.There is in the vicinity of Pittsfield a manufacturing concern devoted to the interests of glas-making. It is situated at Lenox furnace, about eight miles below Pittsfield, and has been in operation about tive or six years. Besides manufacturing common window glass it has been quite successful in other branches of the trace, and has made plate glass i a specialty. This manufacturing conct rn is kn wn as the Lenox Ulass Company, and was chartered in I860. I; is a joint sU ck company, with a capital of one million dollars, six hundred thousand dollars having already been paid in. The works are situated near the Houaatoaic read, and for purpose of transportation a better locality could not have been chosen. They cover two acres of ground, give employment to some three hundred hanas, and are manufacturing largely ail the time. Betides window and plate glass, bottles are also manufactured, am*, another portion of the business which is very extensively carried on is the manufacture of kriol te into lamp-stands. smoke bells, photographers and druggists bottles and tart.
