Martin Luther King to be honored hereSeguin organizations will bold their sixth annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. with a march from Central Park downtown to Jackson Auditorium on the campus of Texas Lutheran College.After the march, the celebration will continue at 2 p.m. with a program in Jackson Auditorium where messages of welcome, greetings and appreciation will be delivered by Seguin Mayor Ed Gotlhardl, Guadalupe County Judge Jim Sagcbicl, Seguin Independent School District Superintendent James Lehmann, Alphonso Rincon of LULAC Council 682 and Dr. Norman Beck of Texas Lutheran College.The Rev. Jimmie L. Flakes will read scripture, and Bishop J.P. Steadman will lead the group in prayer. Emerson Turner Jr. will read excerpts of King’s speeches, and Ernestine Clack will sing. Others featured in die program will be Leslie Harris, H.F. Wilson, the Rev. Troy Bell and the Rev. A J. Malone.James E. Crunk will introduce the keynote speaker, James E. Shippy, director of student activities at St. Philip’s College in San Antonio, whose address has been titled, Let’s Keep the Dream Alive. Shippy earned a bachelor of science degree and a master’s degree in education from Tuskcgec Institute, the Alabama college founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington.The program and activities arc sponsored by die following organizations: Black Cultural Awareness Association, the Ministers Union of Seguin and vicinity, the Seguin branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Black Student Union of Texas Lutheran College, the Guadalupe County Symposium, Texas Lutheran College, Youth Cultural Awareness of Seguin High School and Seguin Hag Manufacturing Co.A special worship service commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Refuge Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 410 N. Guadalupe St., Seguin. Speaker for the evening service will be the Rev. Frankie Rivera.
