It was a small stucco building consisting only of an auditorium and two siWl rooms at the back for Sunday School. The floor was concrete and theKev. A.A. Brian. He and C.E. Koss, E.B. McBumett, W.W. Price and K.W. Howell made up the missions committee which played a big part in helping the Southside Baptist Mission begin.Later, during a simultaneous revival with the First Baptist* Church, Rev. Brian was preaching at the mission while a truest evantrelist Riled‘the floor -concrete, thebenches-hand made’wooden benches were, handmade. At that time, the small congregation called itself the Southside Baptist Mission. The first Sunday Schoolteachers at the mission wereMrs. G.W. Ammons, who taught all the small children; Mrs. Virgil Travis, who taught the juniors; Mrs. Cecil Gwr-ge, who taught the Young People; and Virgil Travis, whotaught the adults and alsoserved as the Sunday School Superintendent.Pastor of the First Baptist Church at that time was thehis pulpit. However, the evangeli^ was taken ill with the mumps and Rev. Brian had to return to First Baptist, sending to Brownwood for Jack Pearce to finish out the revival at the mission.Rev. Pearce not only finished the revival, but he began to serve as the mission pastor, traveling back and forth from Brownwood every weekend. He later became the first pastor of Calvary Baptist Church.On Sunday afternoon, Jan. 2, 1949, the people of theSouthside Baptist Mission met to organize into Calvary Baptist Church with 67 charter members. Those members included Rev. Jack Pearce, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Ammons, Eugene Ammons, Gradie Ammons, Sue Ammons, Annette Barnes, James Barnes, Wanda Barnes, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Barton, LaVeme Edwards Barton, Donald Barton, Leta Feme Barton, Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Cau.sey.Also, Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Copeland. Mildred Copeland, Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Davis, James Davis, Laeford Davis, Mayfa Davis, Mrs. H.C. Dau-ghrity, Mrs. G.W. Dodson, Billy J. Eldridge, Gladys Eld-ridge, Lorene Eldridge, Dovie Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil George, Joyce George, Wanda George, Mrs. D.E. Grant, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Grant, Mrs. Mary Howell, Mrs. Wayne Howell, Mrs. G.W. W'ade.And, Mr. and Mrs. Emb-ree Hulse, James Lackey. Mrs. James Lackey. Thornton, Dale Travis, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Travis.The newly organized Calvary Baptist Church had three deacons. They were H.T. Boyd and Wade Pearce, who are both deceased and Virgil Travis, who is still a deacon in the church today, but on the inactive list.It was during Rev. Pearce’s ministry to the church that a kitchen and more Sunday School rooms were added onto the side and back of the original building. A lotBill Austin. Rev. Austin and his family lived in a small, two room house which later was to be used for Sunday School rooms because in 1954, the parsonage adjacent to the present church building was constructed.Also in 1954, Calvary called its third, pastor. Rev. A. Warren Stowe. It was during his ministry in 1959, that the old church building was remodeled to provide a fellowship hall and additional Sunday hool classrooms. There were also still two barrack buildings which were used for Sunday Schlt;x)l rooms.Rev. Stowe resigned in 1960 and was followed by Rev. H. Von Worton. Rev. Von Worton and his wife wereRev. Stowe leaves as Indonesian Missionar\was also purcha.sed and a cabin built at the BaptistEncampment in Floydada, Tx.Rev. Pearce left Calvary in 1952 and was followed by Rev.missions volunteers and .served at Calvary until 1965 at which time he resigned so that he could travel to Indonesiacontinued on page 75
