Bmkajr ot Souris will otum their dianond wadding anniversary Saturday afternoon and evening* Jan. 19, and be “at borne” to their friends.Mr. Breakey was born In a settlement north of Port Hope, Ont., on Christmas Day, 1999. With his family, he came to Manitoba in the early eighties homesteaded in the Pierson district in 199S. In 1999 he went into business in Souris under the name “Crawford and Breakey” general merchants. He was the first secietary-treasurer of the Municipality of Glen wood and also the town of Souris when it was incorporated in 1997. He represented the constituency of Glen wood for 90 years. As a Liberal candidate he contested eight elections, winning seven and losing one on the recount, by four votes. This kept him out of the house for two sessions between 1990 and 1919. One piece of legislation in the Manitoba Statutes is in part a memorial to Jim Breakey. Col. Ralph H. Webb, when he was a member of the house, was asked to introduce a bill to make Boxing Day a holiday. He asked the support of other members and said it would be a fine tribute to Mr. Breakey as hi* birthday was on Christmas Day. Everyone voted for it. Mr. Breakey retired from public life in 1945.Mrs. Breakey, the former Miss Jessie Hopkins, was bom in Mill-brook, Ont, in 1879, and came to Manitoba in the early eighties. She has been a very active worker in the United Church of Canada.•Mr. and Mrs. Breakey • have one son, J. W. Jr., who resides in Brandon; also one grandson.
