VaderHoad In Bad Shajio.Vader, Jan. 13.—Vader and Ryder-wood are almost cut off from the surrounding country as far as highways are concerned. The Vader-Ryderwood road is almost impassable even for trucks and the Winlock and Toledo roads are in very bad condition. The fill near the Catholic cemetery west of Vader, on the Winlock road, went down with a Standard oil truck one day last week and several loads of gravel, crushed brick, etc., were necessary to fill the hole made. The Ole-qua ferry is able to run only a part of the time because of the high water and the road leading to it is bad. Southern Lewis county is surely “a country without roads.”Two Bad Accidents.Two serious accidents happened at Ryderwood during the past week. On .Monday a young man, timber faller, with his brother, had just felled a tree and stepped out of the way onto another log lying near by on the slope of a hill. The jar of the falling treeas it struck the ground started the log he was standing on rolling and he was crushed into the ground, the big log rolling over him. He was injured internally and his condition is serious.On Friday two men were terribly injured by the premature explosion of a huge charge of dynamite. A young married man named Johnson of Kelso had both eyes blown out and was also terribly injured about the abdomen. The other man, an elderly man named Martinean was not so badly injured, but one eye was destroyed and he was otherwise badly hurt. . The Vader-Ryderwood road is in such bad condition that they could not be brought out by ambulance, it being necessary to bring them out on the gas car as nearly to Vader as possible, transfer them to the ambulance and again to the X. P. passenger at Vader, from where they were taken to the Kelso hospital.Klan (Jives Social Event.The largest and most elaborate social event of the season was the anniversary dancing and card party given by Cowlitz Klan No. 18 at the Chambers hall Thursday evening, at which about two hundred members and invited guests from Toledo, Ryderwood.
