Saturday. January 13. 1973Get Rid of the RotcdiesTHE BRAWL on the basketball court at Lakeland Community Col* lege Wednesday night at the end of the game between Lakeland and Cuyahoga Community College. Metro Branch, was a sickening spectacle. The video tapes showed the anim-al-like quality of some of the fans who charged out of the stands and started swinging and kicking. One wild man m particular, who could be classified as a member of the human race only by the kindest definition of the word, seemed to be attempting to maim anyone within reach.“The players involved in the fight should never play in the TAC (Turnpike Athletic Conference! again. said Lakeland Coach Don Delaney.WHEN A MAN of Delaney s stature makes an observation that pointed, you know the problem is serious.“I can’t continue to subject my players to this kind of thing, he continued. “How can they go out andplay a good game when they know they may get beaten up if theywin?WHArS HAPPENING seems to be part of a trend that's sad to contemplate.Competitive sports have a positive place in the American culture, and even those which emphasize body contact can be played according to the rules. But there are too many rowdies, both playing and watching. The answer is not to eliminate the competition. The proper course is to get nd of the rotten apples.THERE WOULD still be enough gentlemen left to play by the rules, without resorting to mayhem, so that the games themselves could be continued without being diminished in the slightest by the loss of those who have never learned the difference between a game and a bloodbath.If. through bad behavior, a competitor forfeits his right to compete in the future, so be it.
