A new (old) name forAl-CC?Board approves change back to UCCWESLACO-*It'il apparently be UCC once again for the university campus on Ward Island in Corpus Christi. The campus, formerly occupied by the Baptist-owned University of Corpus Christi, is now the home for Texas AI University at Corpus Christi, but a name change back to its original form was approved here this morning. It wasn't all harmonious, however.Directors of the AI system voted 4-to-3 to change the name of its Corpus Christi campus to the “University of Corpus Christi and also to change the name of the entire system to the “University System of South Texas. The directors also voted to change the name of the AI Laredo campus to “Laredo State University. The name changes will be subject to approval of the Texas Legislature, which also will be asked to give statutory authority for the system as a whole. The name of the Kingsville campus, the original school of the system, will remain Texas AI University.AI Board Chairman J. C. Martin of Laredo cast the deciding favorable vote after the other six board members split 3 to 3.The decision on the name for the CorpusChristi upper-level campus was the only part of the legislative package which caused any controversy among board members. Name changes for the two campuses and the authorization for the system were included in one package because legislators had advised it would be easier to push just one bill through the Legislature, Dr. D. Whitney Hailaday, acting chancellor, told the board.Hailaday said the bill would be introduced soon in the Texas Senate by Sen. Carlos Truan of Corpus Christi, with Sen. John Traeger of Seguin joining in sponsorship. Rep, L. DeWitt Hale of Corpus Christi will introduce it in the House of Representatives. Presumably, other local representatives also will support it.Hailaday told the board the administration had been prepared to recommend “Corpus Christi State University” as the new name for the Corpus Christi campus when the board met lastmonth.“But the time lag since that meeting has produced new feelings on the Corpus Christi campus, and now the sentiment is for a change to 'University of Corpus Christi,' Hailaday commented.Dr. Allan Sugg, acting president for Texas AI-Corpus Christi, said the choice of University of Corpus Christi was “a divided opinion among the administration, faculty and students on the Corpus Christi campus. He said he felt the choice was “the best recommendation for the long-range future of the university.Hailaday said the only objection to the choice would be the absence of any language designating the school as a state-supported institution. However, board member Ralph Durden of Corpus Christi commented; If we kick up enough fuss in the Legislature over appropriations, there will be no doubt in anyone's mind that we are state-supported. ;Durden said he objected to the inclusion of the word state in the name, saying, “It really doesn't help anything and it could confuse us in certain people's mind with Corpus Christi State School,Board member Lawrence McNeill of CorpusSee NAME, Page 12A
