He didn't hanker for that branch of the service however and after having resigned to enlist in the civil war hei j decided to quit the train servire. He t j volounteered his service in the army land hung around headquarters sev-ieral days but always the quota was | full and no new recruits were being jc j taken so be decided to come west ] L land see the country. Coming west s’ las far as Chicago he entered the ser- j il | vice of the* C.. and X. W. as a fire- ^ man in 1S62 when the only'engines »iS:Atij were wood burners. He threw wooa a ■into the fire box for twenty-two! j months when he was promoted to ; the right hand side of the cab andEuii1lt;cdh«s:4tii continued to work for the Xortn-| western. .as an engineer for several j years: .He had as- yet; not seen I enough of the great west so accom-jpanicd by his good wife whom he j S j had married in Clinton, he started j for ,the real west, securing employ-j merit in advance however through the influence of a friend who was located in California. He went into the engine service on the Central | c; Pacific and it was while in the em;jslt; ploy of that line that lie had most tlt; of his real exciting railroad experiences. During the year of the Centennial he was chosen to handle many of the special passenger trains ■but the real big exciting service was tlie part he took in the'famous Palmer tour..
