Phyllis Johnson has been a resident of Rabbit Street in Twelve Mile for around 16 years. The street was named after a man who lived there and raised rabbits.When you hear some of the interesting street names of the Twelve Mile community, you may think they were borrowed from a Richard Scary children's book. But Pickle and Rabbit streets were more logical than silly names and made complete sense to the residents of the small town at the time.A resident of Rabbit Street for some 16 years, Phyllis Johnson laughingly tells of the group of six homes on the street We are really just a bunch of hippity-hoppers.”In all actuality, Johnson says the street was originally donned with its name because there was a man who lived on the street many years ago who raised rabbits.“Pickle Street got its name because there used to be a pickle factory on it” says Johnson. “It is no longer there. Heinz shipped the last jar of pickles out by railin 1943.”Until the lime Ned Grable held the office of Cass County commissioner many years ago, not all the streets in Twelve Mile had formal names or street signs. Many streets were as small as alleys and as short as driveways and were justunderstandably identified by their landmarks.Butternut Street was named so because it was the location of a big butternut tree with a swing in it Park Street is a pretty common street name, but it may have never been so rightly named than in Twelve Mile. Here, it is actually the street that winds around the park.There is a Winegardtier Street that was appropriately named after its residents, Roy and Miriam Winegardner, and a Wibel Street that was named for residents Ben Marge Wibel.School Street was the home of what else? The school Bui is now the location of the brand new fire station just finished in the fall. Moss Street was named because it is the long-time home of Moss Fertilizer Service. And Gearhart Street was, of course, named because it was where the Gearhart Feed Mill sal Johnson is a lifelong resident of Cass County. Her ancestors first came to this area in 1791. She raised three sons with her husband Russell on a Cass County farm. She was a teacher for some 35 years before retiring in 1988 from Logansporl High School where she had taught business and vocational studies since 1971.
