MAYOR RECOMMENDS PLEA OF SPORTSMEN BE DENIEDWith Farnham, Bagg Files Report With City Council Regarding Ashley Lake Fishing—State Board of Health Opposed Opening Water SupplyMayor Baer and Publio Works] Commissioner Farnham in a report for the city Council recommend that the petition of the Pittsfield Sportsmen's Club asking that Ashley Lake be opened for ice fishing thia month and next be given leave to withdraw. The report was filed today in the office of City Clerk Harold F. Goggins.Reason for hte recommendation is that the state Health Depart- 1 raent advised, when similar privileges were sought in 1933. that if the lake is used for fishing its use for water supply be prevented. Because the water supply is low the Mayor and Mr Farnham find it impossible to out off this source. The report follow*:—“The Major and Commissioner of tPubbc Works to whom was referred the petition to open Ashley Lake to fishing during the months of January and February j In 1936, having considered the same i report as follows: In December,‘ 1932, the Board of Public Works wrote the State Department of health as follows:—“‘The board has received manv requests recently for opening of Ashley Lake in the town of Washington, one of the city’s sources of water supply, to fishing for aperiod of two weeks. If opened, fishing will be allowed by permit and only under strict supervision. The board respectfully asks your opinion of the advisability of such action.’“To this the state Department made reply that It had previously considered this matter and had under date of Feb. 19, advised that if this lake is used for fishing, its use for water supply be prevented. It was stated that water from this supply, as the department understood it, would be chlorinated, but chlorination of the water would not be sufficient protection to public health in the event of failure of the apparatus. Under the circumstances the department reesm-mende that no water be supplied from this lake during the period when the lake Is opsn for fishing and until analyses of atmpies of water collected after ths lake is closed to fishing show that ths water is of satisfactory quality.*Tn view of ths advice of the State Department of Health and that the water supply is low. making it impossible to cm off supply from Ashley Lake during such a fishing period, wo respectfully recommend that tho petition be given leave to withdraw.’*
