The father and daughter, remained in California for six years, the father obtaining sufficient gold to make the return trip to Linn county. But they did not seek to return with the ox-drawn prairie schooner but took m ship and sailed around Cape Horn, landing in New York City, where they remained a short time and then came to Linn county by way of rail-river route and the old fashioned stage coach. Accompanying them on the trip to California was John W. Huffaker, a brother of Mrs. Veal’s mother, and father of the late Dr. J. R. Huffaker of Brookfield. He also obtained a considerable quantity of gold from the California fields. Mrs. Veal related to a Rudget-Gazette reporter who inter-[ viewed her at the Veal home yesterday that she did not remember a lot about the ocean trip home as both she and her father were intensely sea sick during most of the route home froni California around Cape Horn to New York City.1:11
