Resistor maker hikes productionTRW Resistors, Inc., is on a full-speed-ahead production and employment expansion move that is making a significant contribution to the local economy. You know TRW. It’s the worldwide electronic partsmaker which opened its local manufacturing plant at 4222 S. Staples in 1975 with a staff of 40 people.Jerry Gosda, local manager, said within two months the plant will add 25 to 30 additional employes. This will increase the plant's work force to about 200 and mean an annual payroll of between §1.5 to $1.7 million. The local plant currently ships out about one million product resistor units monthly to highly-sophisticated markets in general in s t r u mentation, computer, military, missile-space and other fields. And the end is not in sight.Gosda said TRW recently completed its fourth stage of development since opening here 17 months ago. From an original start as strictly a manufacturing unit, the plant on South Staples near Gollihar has branched to include a computer center, administrative functions and sales and application engineering that are related to the product making. We are very pleased that we were able to locate in Corpus Christi and stay on our plan for steady growth.” Gosda said. We expect to continue to offer stable and rewarding employment opportunities to the people of Corpus Christi.”TRW has been hiring 25 to 50 people periodically as it has advanced from stage to stage in its local growth plan. About 95 per cent of all its employes have come from the local labor force. Most are in processing or assembly jobs.Gosda said the plant currentlymakes two major resistor family products, but officials are considering adding a third sometime in the fairly near future. The 25 to 30 new jobs openings will range from clerical and processing positions to management, accounting, sales, data processing, electronic circuit design engineering and sales engineering. The pay will vary from standard hourly rates to professional-level, salaried jobs.TRW is a worldwide organization with corporate offices in Cleveland. It has four divisions. The electronic group, with which this plant is affiliated, is based in the Los Angeles area.TRW employs about 99,000 people internationally, and annual sales exceed $1.6 billion. The resistors made here range in si2e from about .082 by ,191 of an inch to units that are about a quarter by three-fourths of an inch in size.TRW evolved from Thompson Products, Inc., one of the pioneer manufacturers of automotive components. It merged with Ramo-Waolridge Corp., the technical director a£ the world's first balistic missile system, in 1958. The new name became TRW, Inc. in 1965.Although TRW is still not a household word in Corpus Christi, Gosda says the local plant is becoming a little better known all the time. Now when people ask me what TRW is and I start to tell them, some say. Oh, I know what that is,” Gosda said. That pleases him.
