M. Prentice, president of the local club, said the first Rotary club was formed in Chicago on Feb, 23. 1905, by Paul P. Harris, a young lawyer. The name “Rotary” was selected because the first meetings of the club were held in rotation in the offices of its members.* * *“THE ONE BASIC objective of Rotary/* Prentice said, “is its ideal of service, which is to be thoughtful of and helpful to others. To attain this objective, Ro-tary seeks all that which bringsrpeople together and avoids all which separates them. This is the reason Rotary has become a worldwide institution, wh ose ideals have been accepted by men differing widely in language, customs and historical backgrounds.“Rotary activities throughout the world are based on the same general objectives as those of our own club — the development of fellowship among business and professional men, the betterment of communities, leading boys and girls into good citizenship, the promotion of high standards in businesses and professions and the advancement of International understanding, good will and peace.55The president said the Massillon club, organized in 1913, now has 80 members. Among its major projects, Prentice added, isthe continuing program of aiding1 needy crippled children in the area with braces, limbs, shoes and other necessities. The Rotary club sponsors an annual Christmas party for these children as well as a summer camp at Buckeye Boy Scout camp. The local club also completed the construction of the “Cappy” Spuhler Health lodge at the camp last summer.Prentice also referred to one of the projects in which the majority of Rotary clubs around the world are participating — the Rotary Foundation Fellowships program inaugurated as a memorial to the founder of Rotary.
