MARLENE SHILREY HAWKINS 1937 -1998A former resident of the Swan River Valley, Marlene Hawkins passed away on Sunday, February 1, 1998 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Comox, B.C., surrounded by her family. She put up a long and courageous fight. We know mom is in a better place and dad was waiting to greet her with open arms. We will miss her, but even though she can no longer be with us in body she will always be with us in spirit.Bom Marlene Shirley Mullen over 60 years ago on September 4, 1937 at Ruby District near Durban, Manitoba. She lived her early life on the farm there. Marlene was the 6th of 9 children born to Ernie and Vera Mullen. She attended Ruby District School until 1945, when the family moved to a farm near Benito and she attended Benito School. In 1948 Marlene moved with her family to Kenville, where her dad had the Kenville Cafe at that time. Marlene Finished her schooling at Kenville School.On October 13, 1956 at Elkhom, Manitoba, Marlene married Trevor Hawkins, the son of the late Joseph and Ella Hawkins of the Pretty Valley District. Trevor was a member of the Armed Forces (R.C.A.F.) and together they lived and raised their family at Cold Lake, Alberta from 1956 to 1959, Belgium (Europe) from 1959 to 1963 and Chatham, New Brunswick from 1963 to 1969. In 1969 they settled in Comox Valley, B.C., living in Courtenay. Marlene worked as a homemaker and worked for the elderly until becoming ill herself.Marlene was predeceased by her husband Trevor in 1985, her father in 1968, her mother in 1992, a brother Ken Mullen in 1987, a sister Norma MacLeod in 1997. Marlene is survived by four daughters and one son, Cindy (Don Hughes) of Courtenay, B.C., Debbie (Bill Moore) of Zeballos, B.C., Roberta (Mike Hughes) of Courtenay, B.C., Larry Hawkins (Kim) of Cumberland, B.C., Martina (Rob Evans) of Courtenay, B.C. Marlene is survived by thirteen grandchildren. She is also survived by five sisters and one brother, Daphne Hawkins of Kenville, Manitoba, Marion Neufeld of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Lois Neuls of Grenfell, Saskatchewan, Lyall Mullen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Florence Pfund of Pickens, South Carolina, and Marjorie Moore of Buffalo, South Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.A service of remembrance was held on Thursday, February 5th at 1:30 p.m. at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Don and Cindy Hughes, 4488 Marsden Road, Courtenay, B.C. Father Kenny Olson, whom Marlene became friends with during her stays in hospital conducted the service. It was well attended by her many family and friends.Interment was with her husband Trevor of Courtenay Cemetery, Courtenay, B.C.
