Above and in sight of the town is the famous Rlue River Islands whefe Captain Hines, with seventy-five Confederates, attempted to cross from Indiana to Kentucky and was captured by the citizens of Leavenworth, after a spir- j ited fusilade of bullets, June 22, 1863. Big Blue River, with its cascades, wa-1 ter-falls and mountain scenery, empties into the Ohio just east of Leavenworth.The manufacturing plants of the Leavenworth Skiff Companies whose output is shipped all over the country, are located here and Leavenworth also has two button factories cutting buttons from the mussel shells that are taken from the river at this place.
