honorable discharge at Ft. Craig m t1868. _ Since writing the above article Mr. Beedle informs us of an occasion when he escaped death by a very narrow margin. In April, 1865. he with three comrades had been sent from Little Rock, Ark., to Washington, D. C., as escort to the aged wife of an officer. The time allotted was sufficient for Mr. Beedle to pay a hurried trip to his home in Medina, which he did. He and his comrades were to meet in Memphis, Tenn., on April 26, on the return trip, to embark on ariver steam er from that point. Upon reaching Memphis one of his companions had not yet arrived and the Steamer Sultana was about to leave. The men waited for their companion and took the next steamer, the Miama. instead. TTie Sultana, laden with 2400 human souls homeward bound from the war. had proceeded.but eight mile';, when one of the boilers exploded while most of the men were sleeping, and 1700 found death either from the elTects of I the explosion, or were drowned in the I river. -The steamer took on its crew I at Vicksburg and was headed for ' Cairo. 111. Mr. Beedle witnessed hun-dreds of dead bodies floating down the I river from the wreckage while await-j ing the next steamer.
