Ed. is one ii of our best boys and we wish him and his tl bride a long and happy life. s|The Gowen Hamilton donation party o last Tuesday evening, was a pleasant social gathering. Mr. Hamilton returned last tall after a four year’s residence in Missouri, and intends making this place his home for the remainder of his days. He has been a resident of this county for 40 years and until recently was an extensive business man, but failed through no fault of his own. A purse of money and many useful household articles were donated through Dr. Anderson, to whom Mr. H. responded in tbaukful terms, age and inflammatory rheumatism confines him to the house.About midnight on the same evening an alarm of fire aroused the people from their slumbers. The large dry goods and grocery store of J. B. Icking, was discovered to be on fire, in the northeast corner, with a strong wind driving the smoke and fiames the entire length of the building, rendering it impossible to save anything not even the books. The fiames spread so rapidly that the whole corner containing one empty frame building. Charles Allen’s grocery store, and J. B. Kiel’s hardware store could not be saved and the crowd commenced removing the contents of the grocery and hardware stores and saving other buildings in line oi falling cinders.Icking lost $8,000 with $2,000 insurance.The chouse valued at $1,600, was not iu sured.Allen saved moat of his stock on which he had $600. He had $000 on the house, valued at $1 200, his stables aud feed store in the rear (not insured) were also consumed. J. B. Kiel saved most of his stock $1,300 on stock, but the house, valued at $800, was not insured.The farmers are offering to help Mr. Icking, who buys all the grain on this side of the river—to rebuild, and Kiel and Allen have substantial offers from responsible parties at home and abroad. They will probably erect a fire proof block all under one roof in the spring.We know nothing about the antecedents of the Thalia troupe. We quoted what they gave as a reason for their trouble in Nauvoo.
