Architect hired for Lee Campus faceliftBy Drew C. WilsonTimes Staff WriterThe Wilson Community College Board of Trustees has selected Oakley Collier Architects as the designer to create a new facade for the college’s Lee Campus.Board members voted unanimously to hire the firm at their quarterly meeting held Monday. The 11-acre property was donated to the Wilson Community College Foundation in 2014.For years, the Lee Motor Company operated Ford and Nissan dealerships at the site.Wilson Community College plans to use one of the four buildings there to house its advanced automotive technology program. A second building will house the advanced manufacturing technology program. The Raleigh-based architectural firm will do the design work and drawings that will be used by a contractor to give the property a facelift.“It’s just trying to dress the front of those two buildings up so that they will look more attractive and more like a community college,” said C. Buren Williford, a trustee on the buildings and grounds committee. “We’re trying to make that look like a community college campus and it doesn’t look that way right now. It still looks like a car dealership now.”The buildings are located at the comer of U.S. 301 and Ward Boulevard, which is about a mile southeast of the main campus. Some $ 1 million is budgeted for all of the renovations.“It’s just an additional contract to spruce up the front of those buildings with a different facade, maybe put some different kind of brick thrown on it to just dress those buildings up,” Williford said.According to Williford, the two buildings should be ready for students in the automotive program to transfer over from the main campus in March.“This work is going to be basically exterior work that won’t create a problem by us occupying,” Williford said. “Nothing conflicts with opening those two buildings.”The project includes providing three extra classrooms, three offices and a conference area in addition to a large sign that will be placed at the comer of U.S. 301 and Ward Boulevard. The college’s automotive technology program will benefit from hydraulic lifts used by he original dealership. In other business, the board:• welcomed new trustee Tom Pyle, who is also a Wilson city councilman representing District 3.• recognized Kendra Faulkner as the 2016 Teacher of the Year and KaySee CAMPUS, Page 2A
