Frosh cogers win Harper tourneyMarshall’s freshman basketball team may have started late and as a loser this winter but it’s gone out on schedule and a winner. The squad completed its season Thursday night by defeating Pennfield 51-40 in the final game of the Harper Creek Freshman Basketball tournament winning the tournament title and its first trophy. The victory was Marshall’s third consecutive and fourth in the last five games after it opened the season five games late because of the school district’s financial problems and promptly lost its first six games.Jeff Woods was the leading scorer for coach Dave Gorringe’s squad with 14points while teammate Russ Penning added 13.Dave Anderson topped Pennfield with 14.Woods and Penning teammed with Dan Trubac to lead Marshall’s dominance of the boards which was instrumental in Marshall’s win according to Gorringe.Penning pulled down a game-high 25 rebounds while Trubac took 11 and Woods 10 as Marshall claimed a team total of 65 rebounds to only 29 for the Panthers.“Our rebounding was one of the most important parts of the game,’’ said Gorringe. “We controlled the boards real well.”Marshall eased into the game’s lead in the first quarter outpointing Pennfield9-8 and then broke the game open in the second frame with a 20-point binge that gave it a 29-14 halftime lead.“The second quarter was probably the best quarter we’ve played all year,” said the Marshall coach. ‘‘We executed nicely, stole the ball off the press and our shooting was hot.”Pennfield staged a briefcomeback in the third quarter taking 14 points to Marshall’s six but the Redskins turned the momentum their way again in the fourth with solid free throw shooting to clinch the victory.“In the third we had some trouble with their press and a zone,” said Gorringe. “But we fought them off at the end by keeping our poise.”Following the game, Trubac and Woods were named to the All-Tournament team.Gorringe said that his squad’s late season success should leave it on solid footing for its sophomore year.He explained that a number of things contributed to the turnaround. “We got a late start,” he said. “We were five games behind and needed the first three or four games to get going.‘‘After that we started getting a team effort. The kids started hustling more after they found out it paid off. After that first win they saw what hustling meant and they started.”Scoring by quarters Marshall 9 20 6 16—51 Pennfield 8 6 14 12—40
