PURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1965Grand Haven Union Pickets 2-Man FirmGRAND HAVEN (DPI) -A unique situation was injected in the 16-week-old Gardner-Denver ; Co. strike Friday when members of the International Association of Machinists threw a picket line up at a new tool plant where the only workers are two men who own the I establishment.Under labor laws there is nothing to prevent an owner from crossing picket lines The line was tossed up at thenew Erdon Tool Co. owned by Ervin Ott and Don Van Geld-eren — who are the only two working in the new plant Ott was a foreman at Gardner-Denver for 17 years and Van Gelderen a foreman at Gardner-Denver for 10 years until they resigned recently to set up their own plant.I Ott denied that Gardner-I Denver financed the shop in order to sublease work to the two men and said it was in the hopper “a long time ago ” Pickets in earlier stages of the strike also involved a sec ' ondary boycott at Harvey | Machine Co which purportedly | was doing work for Gardner-Denver hut the pickets were withdrawn after Harvey Machine Co. denied the report and the union was satisfied The Gardner - Denver strike has been marked by violence, ineliding the tossing of a “Molotov cocktail” at the plant ! which started a small fire re-: centlv and the arrests of several union members on assault and malicious destruction of ! property charges have occurred in separate incidents and are 1 pending The union is under a circuit court injunction to limit pickets at plant approaches Gardner-Denver has been onstrike since Nov. 3. It employes350 union members and about ! 200 non-union workers and white collar workers who have [carried on production on a limited basis since the strike started over a demand for a union shop
