4-H Band to organizeBy DALE J.BLACKLEDGECounty Extension Agent, 4-HAil youth in the county between 11 and 19 years of age who play a musical instrument will be interested to know the Licking County 4*H Band is about to organize for the coming year. The first meeting is scheduled for 7 30 p m. March 3. The band will be meeting at the North Elementary School this year. The school is located on Deo Drive at the north edge of Newark (west Of the Plaza Shopping Center). The band practiced here last year. The leaders of the band this year are Mr. and Mrs. John McLeish, Mr. and Mrs. Ne» Carson, Tom McLeish, Mrs. Jerry Sickles, Mr. and Mrs. James Jones, Dick Williams and Jane Copenhefer. We are looking forward to the finest year ever with our 4*H Band!If any youngsters wish to join the band and can’t make the March 3 registration, they can also register March 10 at the same place. The hand will practice each Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the North Elementary School through June. This may seem like a lot of practice, but when you consider they play 20 or more concerts during the summer, it takes a lot of practice to make them the great band they are.All parents are urged to attend the practices with their children. This serves two purposes.First of all, they can see how their children are progressing during the summer Secondly, the band members get used to playing before an audience. The members are also glad to see the interest their parents show. This is always encouraging to them and they seem to try even harder. This group also spends a week at Camp Ohio — June 11 to 16. This is the time when they receive in-depth instruction with their instrument. Most of each day is spent in practice. However, there is a’so time for fun. One evening is spent around the campfire, another with candlelighting ceremonies. They also can swim during the day, or participate in other types of recreation. The emphasis of the camp is always to become a bettermusical unit. This is the time when members from all partsof the city and county get to know and respect each other. By the end of the week the band is like one large family. If you have further questions concerning the 4-H Band, call me at the extension office, 40 S.
