A, Hedgpeth called a special meeting of the Lumberton City Council Friday to focus attention on a bill introduced in the N C. House of Representatives la*t week. The bill would allow the cities and towns of Rowan county as wttU as the county itself to issue revenue bonds for the purpose of bovine and developing industrialWater streets recently abandoned when new quarters at the new municipal building were provided for law enforcement. The council passed a motion to lease the old police station to Bailey Mutual Insurance Co.. with the provision that the proprietor. Hicks Bailey (currently chief of the Robeson County Rescue Unit), permit useor residential property to further!of as much of the property as the acquisition of new industry.; necessary as headquarters for The bill does not contemplate the Lumberton’s Civil Defense unit.use of local government tax revenue, nor would any indebtedness incurred constitute an indebtedness on the part of the local governmental unit. Repayment o f bonds would be from revenues from the developed propertyv.Mr. Hedgpeth proposed that Robeson legislators be asked to seek an amendment to the Rowan bill to provide the same authority for the City of Lumberton. Mr. Hedgpeth said that such a bill provided authority for the issue of revenue ; bonds for use in connection with ^industrial development, but point-led out that it would be enabling flegislation only, and that suck a bill wou^d not necessarily mean that- such bonds would be sold. He said that he believed that the inclusion of Lumberton in the act (House Bill No. IT) might proveto be beneficial in Lumbertons• %current drive for industry, ‘ particularly in connection with the activities of the recently formed Lumberton Development Corporation.I Motion was made by Councilman fH, Marvin Barker to convey the jfanayor-s suggestion to the county’s ^legislators as being the will of the •pity council; his motion was.see-bonded by Councilman F. K. Biggs, L Jr., and was passed in the absence feof Councilman John J. Hood and riXouncilman Howard Cooper who ,. Avas ill but who unofficially approved the measure':WOMEN'S CLUBS i The special session also considered other .matters, most import-, bant of which was the disposition m the police station at Fifth andMr. Bailey agrees to have his office act as headquarter's for Civil Defense, which mans the Robeson• • iCounty Rescue Unit, and storage for the unit’s equipment will be provided in the area of his office. During evening and night hours rescue unit calls will be cleared through police headquarters which keeps a duty roster for the rescue unit. Rent on the property will be$75 per month.*4Another vacant city property was left undisposed of. A request made at the last city council meeting for establishment of a museum in the old city water plant at Eliza-bethtown road and. Water street was left tabled. This request was made by Mrs. H. M. Baker,, Sr., Mrs. F. K. Biggs, Sr., and Mrs. E. R. Hardin. Since their request* . • m k ,for the building was made the garden clubs of Lumberton and the volunteer women who maintain ak *sewing room for indigents and for the cancer home “have requested use of the building. Although no action was.taken, councIlmen .appeared to hope that rehabilitation of the building couid be a joint project of all women’s clubs in the city. . •,City Manager A. B. Sans bury re-5 ported that a survey of traffic signal needs at the Pine -street-Godwin avenue-Cedar street intersection is in progress and that an automatic signal light will be ordered when engineering on it is complete.
