COUPLESANNIVERSARYtrWeltyThe children of Lloyd E. and Phyllis M. Welty are happy to announce their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 12,1999.Lloyd, bom in Oklahoma, arrived in Fairbanks May 28, 1947. He was a B29 aircraft and engine mechanic for the 375th Reconnaissance Squadron at Ladd Field. In the spring of 1948, hetook a second job delivering wet and dry wash for Gull’s Plumbing and Appliance.Phyllis, born in Los Angeles, came to Alaska in 1943. She moved to Fairbanks in September 1948 when her father was transferred from Ketchikan. Soon after arriving here, Phyllis began working at Gull’s Plumbing and Appliance renting Maytag wringer washing machines and drying customers’ clothes.It was at Gull’s where Lloyd and Phyllis met and their love bloomed!The couple were married Feb.12, 1949, at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Seventh Avenue home of George J. Fader, Phyllis’ father. The Rev. J. Melton Thomas, pastor of the Church of Naza-rene, officiated, Mrs. Aubrey Banks was matron of honor and Staff Sgt. James Meyers was best man. The reception took place at Ann Schiek’s home.When Lloyd left the Army, he worked for Vets Cab, then went to work for Wien Airlines as a mechanic. In August 1951, theirfirst daughter, Vivian, was born.In 1952, Lloyd went back to work for Gull’s as a washing machine mechanic and then ran the laundry for several years. After their second daughter, Naomi,was born in June 1953, they moved to Portland, Ore.It was not long before their love for Alaska brought them back to the Interior. They returned to Fairbanks in 1955 and in the spring of 1956 they purchased their log home, where they still reside today.In 1959, Lloyd went to work for Meadow Moor Dairy (Carnation) delivering dairy products. In the spring of ’59, the Weltys peeled logs to add on to their home as they also prepared for their third child, Valeria, bom in August 1959.During a 10-day boat/camping trip down the Yukon River in 1961, Phyllis realized she was carrying their fourth child, Janet, bom in February 1962. Their fifth child, Dale, was bom in March 1963. In 1970, Lloydbegan work for Civil Service and retired in April 1990. Phyllis also worked for Civil Service from 1976 until retirement in June 1992.In addition to their five children and spouses, John (deceased), Mark and Gary, the couple also have seven grandchildren: Stephanie, Brent, Kari, Mark, Amy, Nicholas and Natalie. All live in Fairbanks except for Vivian of Kenai and Brent and Kari of Vancouver, Wash.Their love for water and quiet wilderness, which began in the early 1950s, has become their second home. In 1967, they built a cabin on the Salcha River. From then on, every summer was and still is enjoyed at the cabin.A family celebration was held Friday, Feb. 12, honoring 50 years of love and happiness at a special restaurant. Those who would like to wish “Happy 50th” to Lloyd and Phyllis are welcome to give them a call!
