Official: K-MartfTo KingsportBy BILL BABNETT Times-News Night City EditorIt’s finally official—A plot plan for the long-rumored K Mart on East Stone Drive just east of the Kingsport Mall was granted tentative approval by the Kingsport Planning Commission Thursday night.It will have 95,811 square feet of floor space for the store proper (compared with 85,000 In Montgomery Wards, 67,000 square feet in Miller's Department Store downtown and 40,000 in a new two-story department store recently approved for the mall itself).Second floor offices will boost the total square footage to 103,011, City Planner Robert Clear said.In addition, Clear added, a portion of .the 13.67-acre site is set aside for a possible future food store. Parting facilities will be adequate for both it and the K Mart, he said.The tentativeness of the commission’s approval was due to the fact approval of the proposed access points to Stone Drive had not yet been received from the State Department of Transportation, although no difficulty was expected on that score.The access plans looked good to the plan-rung commission — especially since they provide for a frontal street parallel to Stone Drive so that it will be possible to drive from the mall to the Ramada Inn on the other side without having to get out into the highway. Frontal streets are considered the best solution to the Stone Drive traffic problem.,Also in the plans is a 50-foot street from Stone Drive to run between the mall and the K Mart.Reports that site preparation in progress between the mall and Raraada Inn was for a K Mart have been circulating for months but confirmation, even from the company's main office in Wisconsin, could not be obtained until now.
