WITH LOSS OF $5000.Fire Visits Thayer Hall, Harvard.iMliliSMHil ...... mmBlaze Resulted From Ignition of Turpentine.Some Students Fled Downv •. • -V •. f 'jkir:‘Fire Escape.Sft -t _____. _lt; *'Just before 2 this afternoon fire broke out in room 61 of Thayer hall, one of the largest dormitories in the Harvard yard, Cambridge, and for a shovt time it looked as if a serious fire would result. Prompt work, however, on the part of the fire department prevented the fire from spreading. The damage will amount to $6000, and will be fully, covered by insurance.Some turpentine which was being used for cleaning the floors became Ignited in some way and In a short time the room was In flames. Great volumes of smoke aroso from tho fire and soon filled the building with smoke, several of the students escaping by way of the fireescapes. Furniture and other things belonging to the students were thrown out the windows.All of the rooms which were damaged were situated on the north entry of tho building and much of the damage to them will be due to smoke and water.The building La a five-story brickstructure.Thayer hall Is In the northeast corner of the yard, next to Holworthy hall.
