This is the first of three dispatches exa-! mining the subject.Bv HARRY FERGUSONWASHINGTON (UPI)—When white men discuss racial problems among themselves, the inevitable moment comes when somebody asks: “Would you allow your daughter tomarry a Negro?”Usually the answer is no, butoccasionally it is yes. Secretary : of State Dean Rusk’s answer ' was yes last September when his daughter, Peggy, married ; Guy Gibson Smith, a Negro. Rusk is a Southerner and the | reaction of two of his cousins in Georgia seems fairly typical of the national attitude.Harold Rusk: “I’d ratherpeople married someone oftheir own race, but that’s their business.” Ernest Stone: “Ithink he (Rusk) should have done something about it. He should have prevented it.“ Interracial marriage includes many things besides unions between Negroes and whites. The U.S. Census Bureau lists Americans as white. Negro, Indian. Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and others. But for reasons of space we will deal here only with marriage between Negroesand whites.Figures Not KnownNobody knows for sure howOccasionally a stray statistic comes to the surface, and it indicates that such marriages are rare. Thus, in New York state in 1963, there were 61,357 marriages. Of those, only 130 were between a Negro and a white person. What are the arguments put forth by whites who oppose marriage with Negroes? The most common one is that the Negro is biologically inferior to the white man, that he is not as far removed from the apes.It is difficult to find anyreputable scientist who will support such a contention. But the argument is heard so oftenthat the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published a study on the subject by 12 scientific experts. Theconclusion was there is no suchthing as racial superiority, and the experts added:No Reliable Evidence“As there is no reliable evidence that disadvantageouseffects are produced by the mixture of races, no biological justification exists for prohibiting intermarriage between persons of different races.”Arnold Rose in his “Negro in America” deals specifically with the question of whether theShoughnessy, Layne, YoungNine Are Named ToGrid HaFameNEW YORK (UPI)—ClarkShaughnessy, whose idea of the man in motion made the modern T-formation effective, and star backs Bobby Layne and Buddy Young were among nine former football greats named Tuesday to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. Also slated for induction into the shrine % at the 11th annual awards banquet in New York, Dec. 3, 1968 are backs Eddie Casey of Harvard, Johnny Pingel of Michigan State and Monk Simons of Tulane andin 1940 and then beat the Washington Redskins 73-0 in the NFL title game.Layne and Young, who went on to star in pro ranks, were stars at the Universities of Texas and Illinois, respectively. Layne was a triple threat halfback who became one of the best of the T-formation quarterbacks. At Texas he had a four-year record of 236 completions in 439 attempts, a .535 percentage, 3,585 yards and 31 touchdowns. Young, who stood 5-feet-5 and weighed 170 pounds, scored 13 touchdowns in 1944Negro is closer to the ape than the white man: “Of the four most notable characteristics generally ascribed to the average Negro — dark skin, broad nose, wooly hair, thick lips—only the first two make him slightly more similar to the apes. The white man’s thin lips and straight hair are, on the other hand, much nearer to the traits of apes.”There is a widespread belief among many whites that the Negro is more sexually potent and more sexually indiscrimin-!HoosiersMake Taxate than whites and therefore should not be allowed to cross the color line in marriage. Here, again, scientific support is difficult to find. In “Cast the First Stone,” a study of prostitution in New York City, Judge John M. Murtagh and Sara Harris tell about Jean Ford, a Harlem prostitute who found the ideal of sexual superiority amusing.Write Own Ticket “It’s fascinating about all these white men who come uptown,” she said. “A colored girl who plays her cards right and isn’t too bad looking canpractically write her own ticket with them. They seem to feel that, because some of us haveremote ancestors who lived in Africa once, we are all primitives at heart when it comes to sex. Actually, most of them are a lot more primitive than we are. Sometimes their good wives are, too. Catch them believing it though. Let the innocents hold on to their prejudiced delusions as long as they are willing to pay for them. Besides, I doubt if we could disillusion them if we tried.”ErrorsINDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — The Indiana Department of Revenue has announced that in making out state income tax returns, Hoosier servicemen are failing to take the exemption that is rightfully theirs.William L. Fortune, commissioner of revenue, urged relatives of servicemen to notify them they are entitled to exempt up to $2,000 of their military pay.Military pay is totally exempt for the period a man spends in a combat zone or in a hospital as a result of action in such a zone, Fortune said.He also said that a serviceman is entitled to the $8 sales tax credit for each member of his family provided they are still legal residents of Indiana.Four common errors beingBy United Press International INDIANA BASKETBALLCOLLEGESt. John’s 83 Notre Dame 81 Earlham 116 Rose Poly 84 Indiana Central 78 Anderson 70 Indiana Tech 106 Huntington 77 Manchester 107 Franklin 103 Taylor 94 Hanover 93 (OT) Tri-State 78 Concordia 75maHp hv tnvnjjv’prc nn thoirHIGH SCHOOLLafayette 56 Indianapolis Cathedral 47Evansville North 107 Boonville 58Hammond Noll 86 Highland 61Elkhart 83 South Bend Central 70Gary Mann 72 Gary Wirt 64Gary Edison 64 Hammond Morton 59Garv Andrpan 71 Calnmpt MAnother argument some white persons bring against interracial marriage is that the Negro is lazy, shiftless, takes no interest in personal hygiene and, to put it bluntly, emits an unpleasant body odor. Otto Klineberg, in “Race Differences,” tells about a test that was made on odors:“They collected in test tubes a little of the perspiration of the white and colored students who had just been exercising violently in the gymnasium. Those test tubes were then given to a number of white persons with instructions to rank them in the order of pleasantness. The result showed no consistent preference for the white samples: The test tubes considered the most pleasant and the least pleasant were both taken fromwhites.”The conclusion was that the belief Negroes are unpleasant might stem from the fact the slum dwellers and the sharecroppers have a limited access to bathtubs.(Next: What the Negroesthink about inter-marriage.)
