Kerrville DailyTHE NEWSPAPER OF THE HILL COUNTRYFEB f 9 1393inrorarudayFebruary 9,199819 contestants strut their stuff in pageantBy Robert KlausTimes Staff WriterSaturday night, I lived every red-blooded American boy’s dream.I was a judge at a beauty pageant.I should have known, however, there would be a catch to it.These contestants were big, hairy and — well, to put it tactfully, borderline attractive. My gorgeous gals, as it turned out, were not gals at all. They were men and they were, all 19 of them, contestants in the first 1998 Womanless Beauty Pageant (“I Can’t Believe It’s Not a Woman”) held at Kerrville Municipal Auditorium. Some were teachers and students at Tivy High School. Not too surprising since the pageant was a ftind-raiser for the benefit of the school band. Money raised will help to send the band to play in the Surprise Parade at Florida’s Disney World in March.Others represented various local businesses. All contestants were gorgeouslyoutfitted in designer exclusives with Sassoon hairstyles andpumps by Gucci. Well, not quite, but they were dressed as women. How judges voted on individual contestants to reign as Miss Band Babe 1998 (that was the title at stake; would I kid about something this serious?) is a fiercely guarded secret, but I can report that chosen babe of the year was Clifton Fifer, a teacher at Hal Peterson Middle School, who competed under the nom de guerre, Cleopatra.Clad in a slinky, fire-engine red frock, Cleopatra was a loudly acclaimed winner who took a prolonged victory lap around the entire auditorium with many celebratory flourishes.First runner-up was a tie between Greg Shrader (“Daphne”), editor and publisher of the Kerrville Daily Times, and Ben Reddell (“Benjamina”), a Tivy senior. Second runner-up was Rick Phipps (“Miranda”) whobrought honor (dishonor?) to Durrin’s Cleaners.t am permitted to report here a few vagrant thoughts that flittered through this reporter/judge’sSee HAIRY, 8AAbove: Marc “Melba” Neuman has his/her hair fixed by Darcey Hill prior to the Womanless Beauty Pageant as other contestants Chrissie Poo” Bowman and “Benjamina” Reddeit ham it up in the background. The bizarre fund-raiser benefitted the Tivy Band Boosters.Left: Clifton Cleopatra Fifer is crowned 1998 Band Babe at the pageant Saturday night at Kerrville Municipal Auditorium by pageant announcer Pat Murray.(Times photos by Ken Schmidt)
