Some of the boys were: Elmer Smith, Charley Dozer, Link Tuttle, Ed Kearns (Natchez), Cap Smith, ‘‘Lin Bur-well, Albert Haas, Fred Shaw, Charlie Kappes, Willie Wor-stall, George Harlan and others.I remember after the unpleasant times (Civil war) people laughing about an officer who was home on a furlough. John Morgan’s raiders were very busy in the north. It was rumored that they were headed for Putnam. So this officer organized a posse of men left in Putnam. They armed themselves with every weapon imaginable and with the soldier in command they rode down the river road. As they were riding along listening to thefr commander telling them how to capture the. raiders, they rode right into an ambush prepared by Morgan for them. Their horses, arms, etc., were taken from them and Morgan
