MIt HappenedtHereLooking Backward1956One often hears of the Eve of St. Valentine” and of the Valentine. observance, and wonders ofthe origin. The encyclopedia gives the following information: Valentine, the name of two third century priests who suffered martyrdom in the year 270, during persecution under Emperor Claudius II. One of these saints is said to have been a Roman priest and the other was the bishop of Terni, Italy. The feast of both was celebrated on February 14. St. Valentine is the name given to many other martyrs celebrated by the various Roman Martyrologies, but the date on these saints is very obscure. At any rate, it is worth noting that the various popular customs connected with St Valentine’s Day seem not to have been derived from worship of the saint, but to have an obscure pagan origin...My, and aren't there a lot of pagansamong us9♦ * *Could be that we observe this because it’s such a pretty occasion, red hearts, laces and ribbons. and it could be that it’s such a nice social event, just before the Lenten season and about half-way between Christmas and Easter.
