The city of St. Charles, which will celebrate its centennial next fall, began its history in 1769, when Louis Blanchette, surnamed LeChasseur, ’’The Hunter,” built his cabin on its present site. It was first called Les Petit Coteau, ’’Little Hills,” and afterwards changed to Village Des Coteau, ’’Village of the Hills.” In 1774 the name ■was changed to St. Charles, in honor of Don Carlos, King of Spain. It was the state capital from 1820 to 1826, and the building in which the first laws of the state were enacted is still standing there.
