The church began in 1877 under the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Dix, Mr and Mrs. Isaac Tilden, and the Rev. Horace Tiffany. Methodist services were held in ViennaTHE REV. W. FYFFETownship and western Grundy County as far back as 1843, however.Under the direction of theRev. L. L. Pearce, pastor of the Verona church from 1911 to 1914and also a carpenter, SundaySchool rooms were built.During the time the Rev. K. A. Lipp was pastor, from 1951 to1954. the church’s exterior was covered with asbestos siding, the steeple was taken down, and the interior paneled.The Rev. William Wayne Fyffe is the present pastor of Verona United Methodist Church (also pastor of Mazon United Methodist Church). There are 149 members of the Verona church, which has a seating capacity of about 90. Sunday worship is at 10:45 a.m.The Rev. Fyffe was bom in Maysville, Ky., and was graduated in 1969 from Kentucky Wesleyan College with abachelor of arts in religion and philosophy. He also was graduated from Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville in 1974. He has been at Verona United Methodist Church one year.The Rev. Fyffe has previously worked for two years as a family counselor for a day care center for the multiple-handicapped.
