The chief is a native of the Sioux tribe, which he said was one of the largest Indian nations. They are a proud people and are also called Dakotas.Chief Red Eagle spoke at length of the service of the American Indian in this war. He said that there are over 50,000 Indians in the armed forces, compared to 11,000 in the last war. He had recently visited the Sioux Reservation in Iowa and noted many improvements. He said Indian children now have good schools which they can attend close to their homes. He himself told of his training at Carlisle.The chief said Indians are religious and often have services and fasts lasting a long time. He sang a queer, Indian religious song. He was clad in full regalia of an Indian chief, and he did a war dance at the conclusion of his speech.
