In Neosho Tourney . * .McAiiley Paddles Pineville, 87-63NEOSHO, Mo. - Jim Wyatt’s McAuley Regional Warriors of Joplin, down one point at intermission, called on reserve guard Greg Scheurich to lead a third-period comeback that carried them to an 87-63 opening-round victory over Pineville Saturday night in the Neosho Christmas holiday basketball tournament.The Warriors, on the short end of a 32-31 half-time count, sent the 5-8 Scheurich into the tussle at the start of the third period and the junior guard responded with five field goals to ignite a 31-point scoring spree that shot McAuley in front, 62-42, at the close of the session.In the other night contest, second-seeded Neosho raced to an early lead and went on to crush Diamond’s Wildcats; 83-63.In opening-round tests Saturday afternoon, top-ranked Triway trimmed a hard-fighting Carl Junction quintet, 58-47, and eighth-seeded Carthage thumped Anderson, 73-51.McAuley, posting its 10th victory in 11 starts, received strong scorir** performances from Bob Todr .om Rawlings, Scheurich and Charley Roderique.Todd, a 6-2 junior forward, pumped through 19 points on seven fielders and five of 10 charity attempts. Rawlings, 6-5 Warrior pivot, rimmed 18 points on six fielders and six of seven free throw tries. Scheurich counted 12 points and Roderique, 6-2 playmaker of the Warriors, added 11.Game honors, however, went to Pineville’s Gary Wellesley. The Blackhawks* sharpshooter gunned through eight fielders and connected on 13 of 20 charity shots for 29 tallies.McAuley grabbed an early lead and pulled away to a 19-12 advantage at the quarter. Pineville, however, caught fire in the second stanza and rode the shooting of Wellesley and Mickey Grissom to a 32-31 edge at intermission.After Planchon sank a charity shot, Carthage closed the gap to three points when Roy Mers hit a charity toss and Wilson Lounis and Gary Wofford cashed in twice each at the free throw line. Planchon sank a field goal, and then Wofford, Lounis, and Bruce McCurry sank consecutive field goals to put Carthage ahead to stay, 14 to 11, with 1:23 left in the first quarter.From there on the Tigers rolled behind the shooting of Lounis and Wofford to gain a 37-22 lead at half-time. It was never close the rest of the way as Carthage pulled steadily away from Anderson.Lounis hit 26 points and Wofford 17 for the Tigers. Planchon was high for Anderson with 27 points.First-round action will be completed Monday night, with Seneca’s fifth-rated Indians meeting Goodman at 2 o’clock and Wheaton’s seventh-ranked Bulldogs testing Webb City’s Cardinals at 3:30 o’clock in the afternoon games.
