In June, 1873, he was went to Wakefield. Here he worked faithfully, built the basement of St Joseph’s church, bouffht land that the church might be completed according to the original plan, and house and land fora parochial residence, By his earnest work he paid off a debt of $14,000 on the church property, and left the church ire© from all Incumbrance., ^He was transferred to Malden in 1884 and four years later became, the first permanent rector of the ImmactWate Conception parish, which was formerly St Mary's. Muring his pastorate here he has renovatedand beautified the church so that now it will compare favorably with the larger chirrehevS in the archdiocese.He has taken an active fliteresfc in the education of the children of his parish, and has erected a tine parochial school building of brick at a cost of $80,000.The erection of this building added greatly to the debt of the parish, but it was found necessary, in order to accommodate all the Catholic children. The two parochial school buildings are now filled with pupils, and the scnools are in charge of the teaching order of t he sisters of Notre Dame,f.nd their good work is shown in the great mprovement in the morale of the children who have been under their charge.Up to the year 1853 the few Catholics in Malden were obliged to hear mass in Medford. where Rev Man asses Doherty came frequently to hold services, or to go to Cambridge or Charlestown. During that year Kev John Ryan was appointed the first pastor of Malden. t , .. .His jurisdiction included Medford, Melrose. Wakefield, Everett, Stoneham, Reading and Winchester. The first mass was celebrated in Greene's hall, now known as Dowling’s block, comer of Pleasant and Middlesex sts. Only a few years ago there was only ooe church for the Catholics of Mediord and Malden; now Alai den alone has four churches and twoparochial schools.The.Catholic* also own the fine Coburn estate on {Salem st, which is well adapted for a church and parochial school, although it may he utilized as a site for an academy. The Catholic population is estimated atFr FI a tie v has two energetic assistants in Revs Frs Hullivan and 8cxton.
