Zuniga, chairman of the Mr. South Texas Committee of the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association, told Bentsen he is a “most valued and loyal friend of Laredo and the South Texas area.”Bentsen, who s e r v e d in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1948 to 1955, representing the district that then included Laredo, told the group that the honor “is the finest Christmas present a South Texan could receive.”Bentsen termed the celebration in Laredo a symbol of gratitude to the founders of America and also “o f f e r s the hand of friendship to Mexico and recognizes that great nation’s traditions, culture and aspiration.”In addition to Zuniga the delegation included Mayor J. C. Martin Jr.; J. C. Martin in, president of the celebration; A. E. Guajardo, member of the Mr. South Texas Committee; Tommy Guarjardb, vice president of the association and Albert Mag-non, an officer of the association and vice president of the Laredo National Bank.The Laredo celebration will be the 74th Washington’s Birthday observance in the border community, and Bentsen is the 19th Mr. South Texas since the honor was initiated in 1952.UT officials will ask the Legs-lature to appropriate about $8.2 million for construction in the biennium. Federal law makes funds available on a two-for-one match when such funds are to be used for construction of new health education facilities, Knisely explained.Knisely said he could not discuss priorities as far as the status of the San Antonio dental school is concerned, but he understands that often the allocation of federal funds depends first upon the availability of state or local funds.The availability of state or local funds, he explained, could have a bearing upon the order of priorities.If a school were number one on the list of priorities, but had no state or local matching funds at the time HEW was ready to allocate federal funds, it is possible the federal agency might look to the next application on the list of priorities, he speculated.LLOYD BENTSEN . .
