When Duncan, Wales Skinner purchased the real estate of the Kendal Community, their first public act was to donate a square containing about two acres for j “literary purposes.” This is the land on which the High School building is bow located, on North street. On this ground was erected in 1848 the first school building in Ohio after the passage of the law by the General Assembly regulating the “Union School System” in this state. Of the first board of directors, Charles London was president; Arvine Wales, treasurer, and Wm. Bowen, secretary. The first school examiners were Kent Jarvis, Philander Dawley and George Miller. Lorin AndrewB wa9 the first superintendent of schools, who resigned in 1852 to accept the presidency of Kenyon College. The teachers employed the first yeat* were Miss Betsey Cowles, T- Tl. .L-k OL.
