HENRY FOXES OBSERVE 54THWEDDING ANNIVERSARY AT PIBFormer Put-in-Bay Mayor and Mm Henry Fox celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary Friday. December 9. with a family gathering in their island home.Anna Haller and Henry Fox exchanged marriage vows at a double ceremony in the parlors of the then famous Beebe House on the evening of December 9, 1896. The other couple, both deceased, were the late Martha Hinger andLucas Meyers.The bridal couples were taken into the Sandusky harbor the following day, aboard the Norma, n stone barge of the Kelley Island Lime ami Transport Company. The boat trip was a lengthy affair, .from 7 n. m. until 2 p. m., with the boat breaking ice ail the way.From Sandusky, the foursome traveled by train to Col u minis where they spent a week's honeymoon touring the city. On the return trip, they were held up in Sandusky several days awaitingtransportation to Put-in-Bay. They were guests at the old West House during the stay.Finally, the newlyweds found passage aboard the Golden Eagle, a boat transporting wines from Middle Bass to Sandusky, and afairly good ico breaker.In 1901, when the Board of Trade, which is now the Chamber of Commerce, was formed, Mr. Fox was elected secretary and served until 1926.Wien Mayor Thomas Alexander passed away in 1937, Lucas Meyers, as president of the council, finished out the term. Later that summer, at the request of the central committeeman, Henry Fox ran for office and we re-electedas mayor. He served continuous-| ]y until July 15, 1949, when due to poor health, ho offered his resignation to the village council.The Henry Fox's first home wasin the George Hollway residence,now owned by the 1’arteII familyof Hamilton. Ex-Mayor Fox wasofficially mayor at that time, having been elected in 1893 and served for six consecutive years.Mrs. Fox served as an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Guild for many years and also as assistant purser at the Fox Pock. Poor health forced her to give up these activities 15 yours ago.At their golden wedding anniversary on Pec. 9, 1945, Open House was observed. Plans are being made for another open house observance next yiear to celebrate the 55th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fox.
