Sale of Bass Islands Co. Expected in Merger of Grape Juice InterestsIt was announced Wednesday lluit a local industry* the Bass Island Vineyards Co., will probably be sold shortly to become part of the United Grape Products Co., Inc., which will have general headquarters at Buffalo.John W. Kuemmel, secretary-treasurer of the local company,said Wednesday that negotiationshave been in progress for some time for the purchase of the local plant. Pie said that the deal has not been closed as yet, however, but believes final papers transferring ownership will be signed soon.The local plant, if sold, will be one of seven companies to be part of the merger which will make the Buffalo concern one of the largest manufacturers of grape juice in the country. C. C. Palmer, formerly connected with J. Hungerford SmithCo. interests, will be head of the new concern, according to Buffalo reports.The plants to be acquired are located in New York, Michigan and Ohio. Harvey Kish Sons of New York are bankers for the company which is now being formed.If ail of the plants are acquired as now seems probable, the United Grape Products Co., Inc., will have a yearly production of 1,000,000 cases of grape juice taking rank with any company now engaged in a similar business.Kuemmel said that he believed the local plant will continue to operate If the sale is completed. The Sandusky plant which Is located at 1702 Campliell-st, Is well equipped and has been engaged in the manufacture of grape juice in the present quarters since 1906, and prior to that was in business on Water-st.In addition to the plants to be purchased outright by the new company, several other plants will be controlled so far as production is concerned.
