by Keith ReinhardHe who wants, gets St. Viator coach Bill Probst summed up Friday’s heartbreaking Lion loss to Notre Dame in such a manner.“It isn’t always the best team that wins,” he said. “It’s the team thatwants it the most and in this case Notre Dame was just a little hungrierfor the win than we were. ’The Dons were exactly one point hungrier, 62-61, and it took them an overtime session to compile it. Junior guard Mike Parker plunked in four straight free throws in the final 20 seconds of play to insure the victory in theNotre Dame gym.RECORD-WISE, it might haveappeared that the hosts didn t have a chance. Coming off an 89-61 loss to St.Joseph, the Dons sported a lowly 1-4 overall mark compared to Viator’s excellent 5-1 slate.And through most of the first threeperiods the records seemed to tell the story. Notre Dame trailed by as many as 10 points at one time and had not owned one lead in the ballgame at the beginning of the fourth quarter.A 10-footer by Fran O'Malley, Parker’s steal and fast break layup, twofree throws by Parker and a layup by Paul Marusak in succession changed all that Including two points to end the third quarter, the Dons collected 10 unanswered points to grab a 45-43 edge with 4:44 to go in regulation time.The Lions countered on John Mooney’s two free throws and regained the lead on Joe Molloy’s short jumper but it was an elusive advantage. With 1:21 to go Mike Keehan put St. Viator on top again 50-49 and Parker hit the back end of a two-shot foul with 1:07 remaining to knot the game at 50-all.Viator’s last lead of the game oc-cured at 0:43 on Molloy’s 10-footer.Stan Kapka hit underneath for the Dons at 0:16 to send the game intoovertime.IN THE extra period Notre Dame quickly jumped ahead by four and the Lions never were able to catch up. Both Molloy and Mike Leonard picked up their fifth fouls early in the overtime to further hinder Lion chances.“We had several chances to put them away early and didn’t,” shruggedProbst “That’s the sign of a good team but obviously we have a way to go.
