Miss., Ic. 9.—OP)—Eight persons were killed another critically burned, and three injured today in an explosion and fire at the Phoenix Naval Stores. Inc., plant, five miles north of here..5Company officials estimatedproperty damage at approximately$250,000.The dead are Henry Jeptha Hurst, 37, white, and seven Negro men. Firemen and others at thescene removed the charred bodies from the mass of smoulderingdebris.IiPI»Another Negro man was removed to a Gulfport hospital, not expected to live.Tanks Blown OatIIThe explosion centered in the : extracting unit and two large tanks were blown through the | \ side of the building, one carried about 150 feet by the blast. 11The plant had resurhed operations only about two weeks ago after completing repairs from an-1 other explosion which killed one man last August.More than a dozen employes were on duty at the time. The survivors barely escaped as the flaming tanks sprayed burning extract about them.After the explosion survivors walked around in a daze, describing the burninig mass as a hell of fire ami death.*»iTwo bodies were pinned in the wreckage and Gulfport Fire Chief Floyd Miller said acetylene torches j would be needed to remove them.! .The cause of the explosion, | which practically demolished the plant.
