CIF semifinalsLakewood water polo foe NewportLakewood High will attempt to keep Newport Harbor out of the CIF water polo finals for the first time in five years tonight when the schools tangle at BelmontPlaza Olympic Pool.The Lancers and Tars play the first semi-final game at 7:30 followed by Sunny Hills (21-2) against Crescents Valley (20-3) at 9. Finals are Friday night.Defending champion and top-seeded Newport is 29-2 and avenged one of the two losses by edging Fullerton in the quarter-finals, 4-3. *Lakewood (17-3) dropped an early season practice contest to the Tars. Coach Ken Hamdorf believes his Lancers have a good chance of reaching Ihe finals.. The team has received balanced scoring from Bill Krebs, Dan Green, Jerry Cvecko and Paul Wawrzynski and outstanding goal tending from Steve Henley.The Lancers reached the finals once before, losing to Newport 5-3 in 1968. The Tars won titles Sn 1967-68-70 ar.d weie runnerup to Corona del Mar in 1969.
