uniton wets as Warriors Hurdle St. Mary’s, 58-51Mike Canton, 6-0 junior forward, split the cords for 24 points here Saturday night to lead the McAulev Warriors to a 58-51 victory over the taller Panthers of Pittsburg St. Mary’s.Canton struck for six field goals and 12 free throws to capture game scoring honors. Creg Scheurich and Roland Sehriever each added 13 points fer McAuley. Francis Ferns paced the Panthers with 16 po*nts.Dennis Ferraro staked the Panthers to a quick lead, canning a field with 10 seconds cone. Sehriever put McAuley in front as he connected from the floor and added a free throw for a 3-2 margin.\ MrW by John Wachter out the Panthers on top again, but Pan Perkins returned the Warriors to the lead. 5-4. McAuley blossomed to leads of 24-17 and 30-21 before St. Mary’s switched to a man-to-man press and pulled to within three points,32-29. at the half.Ferns connected for St. Mary’s with 7:05 remaining in the third period, then McAuley resumed its delay game. The Warriors held the hall until Canton drew a foul and put McAuley ahead,33-31, with 55 seconds remaining. A free throw by Canton gave McAuley the lead at 34-33 with 25 seconds left, but Steve Farris connected at tho dose of the period to put Pittsburg back into the lead, 35-34.McAuley, playing for the percentage shots, struck for five consecutive points at the outset of the final stanza to regain the lead. 393. Wachter hit a pair of free throws with 5:30 to play to pull Pittsburg into a 42-42 deadlock. Ron Mishmash added another charity toss to put the Panthers in front, 43-42. with 4:30 to play. A pair of free throws by Canton and a fielder by Paul Perkins put the Warriors on top, 48-45, with 4 00 togo-A fielder by Ferraro with 3; 10 remaining returned the lead toPittsburg, 49-48, but Mike Canton regained the lead for McAuley with a pair of free throws. The Warriors then continued on to increase the bulge to 58-51.McAuley also won the prelim-inary B contest, 50-38, as Dave Kunze connected on six field goals and three free throws for game scoring honors.Following the game Wyatt said he felt the Warriors had played a fine game. “The boys put out a tremendous effort,” Wyatt commented. “They wanted to win tins one very much because of the rivalry with Catholic schools.
