Third-Quarter Spurt Lifts McAuley Over Alba, 75-60McAuley Regional high school’s Warriors, paced by Tom Rawlings, pulled away at the outset of the third period and went on to defeat Alba’s Wildcats, 75-60, here Friday night in a Little Eight Conference tussle.The victory was the Warriors’ third against one loss in conference play and their fifth against one setback over-all. The Wildcats now sport a 2-2 mark and a 5-3 record over all.The Warriors opened the scoring on a fielder by Chuck Rod-erique, a 6-2 guard, and took a 4-0 lead on a basket by Rawlings, before Alba’s Ron Cantu stripped the nets for the Wildcats.It was a nip-and-tuck battle through the first quarter, with Alba tieing the score at 12-12 with less than three minutes remaining. The Warriors ended the quarter on top, 19-16.Alba struck for five straight points at the outset of the second period, to take the lead, 21-19, before McAuley’s Horace Williams pushed through a fielder and charity-shot to put the Warriors back on top. Alba then took ;a three:point lead on ajump shot by Gaylen King and Cantu’s free throw.The Wildcats maintained the three-point lead until McAuley came back to tie it at 32-all with three minutes left. The Warriors, with Skipper Gant holding the hot hand, hit two free throws and a fielder to take the lead, 36-32 which they never relinquished.McAuley held a seven-point lead. 41-34, at intermission.Rawlings and Gant then hit two straight baskets, beginning the second half to give the Warriors a 45-34 bulge. The closest the Wildcats could get to McAuley during the third period was nine pqints. The local five was infront, 57-46, at the end of three periods,The Warriors outscored Alba, 18-14, in the final period for the winning margin^■-.viir ■ 4-5-. center, finished with 24 points on 10 field goals and four gratis shots: Roderique and Gant followed with 11 tallies each.Bill Hoy, a 5-11 guard, led the losers with 17 points on six fielders and five charity shots. John . Edwards, a 6-3 center, was close behind with 11 points. IPaul Perkins and Greg Scheu-rich combined their talents for 36 points as the McAuley 4lt;B” team ran its winning streak to six games, paddling Alba, 69-42, in the preliminary contest.Perkins led the scorers with 20 points, followed by Scheurich with 16 tallies.
