—— ......iA'UtgLongero Key To CarsonBasketballFortunesBy BILL ARK3P0LECarson High School basketball coach Tom Andreasen sums up the Senators’ 1974-75 season in one player — Mike Longero.“If Mike’s playing well, the rest of the team is playing well,” Andreasen said.“He does everything well. He just has got to have an all-around performance for us.”Longero, who is playing his third varsity season for Andreasen, showed what he can do during the 1973-74 campaign.The 6-foot-4Vi forward averaged 19.6 points a game and 17.1 rebounds. He was voted Northern “AAA” All-conference, shared the most valuable zone tournament player award and was only one of two northern players, along with Wooster's Marty Kaye, to make the “AAA” All-state team.Longero hasn’t let up during the Senators’ first two weeks of practice.“I’ve coached some pretty good players, but he’s the best I’ve ever had,” Andreasen, who coached three years at Virginia City before coming to Carson in 72-73, said.While Longero is the catalyst to Carson’s success, Andreasen is more than happy with the supporting cast.“Experience-wise, the only starter we lost wasDave Lundy,” Andreasen said.Returning from a Carson team that went 11-14 last season and finished third in the zone tournament are guard Paul Gray and forwards Rob Young and Don Crossley.The four returnees are “a year older, a little bigger and have a lot more experience,” Andreasen said.Gray draws the most attention.“He is probably the key to our season,” Andreasen said of the 6-2, 180-pound junior.“Besides Longero, he’s got more tools than anybody else on the team.He’s a super talented basketball player if he puts everything together.” Young averaged ninepoints a game last year.“Probably the best way to describe Rob Young is he is an unorthodox player that can get the job done,” Andreasen said.“He’s not the classic example of a perfect basketball player, but he’s extremely strong and fast and his desire makes up for it all.”Crossley brings a good shooting touch to the Senators’ cause.“He’s a very versatile player, an adequate rebounder, passer and a heady basketball player,” Andreasen said.Bill Nagel will be the fifth starter.CARSON R05THPaul Gray, 6-fool-2, ISO pounds, two years yorsny experience. sr.; Bill Nagel. 5-1!, 170, IV.TOM ANDREASEN... basketball optimismjr ■ Reese Bwiwjdc. 5-11. 155, JF, jr.; JerrySchroder 6-0, 165. none. ,r.; Barry Kbicb. 5-11, 160, frtxh, soph..... .
