Hoteliers purchase Gimli’s ShorelinerBy Roger Newman_Who would move to Gimli when they could spend the winter enjoying the balmy, snow-free climate on Vancouver Island?The answer to that uncomplicated question is Anita Sharma, the new part-owner and manager of the Shoreliner Hotel and BeachResort at 39 First Ave.Anita and her father Sushil Sharma acquired the Shoreliner in early November from previous owners Norman Smith, Neil Baker and Donald Ciemny. Although the Sharma family is based in Winnipeg, it owns hotels and motels in Nanaimo and Port Albemi on the British Columbia island.Anita, 27, a first-time hotel owner and manager, has a background of working fortwo years at the B.C. hotels that her father began buying in 1989.‘They were a good training ground,” she said in an interview. “I really enjoy the hospitality business and I’ve been working in restaurants since I was 17.”She said she and her father bought the Shoreliner because they wanted to be a little closer to the family's Winnipeg home. She was raised in the north end Maples district and is a board member at the Maples Community Club and a longtime volunteer at the Maples Youth Activity Centre. She is also three courses short of a sociology degree after studying at both the University of Manitoba and Malaspina University in Nanaimo.“I am planning a career in the hotel industry, but 1intend to complete my degree so that I will have another option available to me,” she said.Her father Sushil emigrated from India in 1972 and worked as a CP Rail machinist for 14 years before getting into the hotel business. That could lead to innovations in the spring or summer.The previous owners had been trying for years to redevelop the Shoreliner property, looking first at a condominium time share, then at a Days Inn. Part of the plan was to transfer the Shoreliner building and business to another Gimli location. Anita is also house hunting in Gimli. “I've never lived here, but I've been to Gimli previously for air shows and days at the beach,” she said.In the realm of hobbies, she ran a craft workshop for children aged eight to 16 at the Maples youth centre. She also works out in the gym and has bought a membership at the Gimli Roc Centre.“I belonged to a boxing club in Winnipeg and a kickboxing club in Nanaimo.” she said. “I've taken lessons in both sports and am looking for Gimli opponents.”
